I just happened to be looking for this thread. I've been playing my ATgames Sega Genesis portable lately. hehe. Anyway, I think this thread should be moved to the "Retro Gaming" section of the forum.

Do any of you guys have recommendations for shooters (shmups) on the Genesis, aside from the Thunder Force series?

For Genesis? Darius II is pretty sick. I'd definitely give that a go for shmup goodness. Damn unforgiving, but damn addicting.

Space Harrier - awesome goodness.
I have fond memories of afterburner at the arcades but mainly due to the feeling of the cabinet - made you feel like Goose and Maverick!
I picked up one of these handheld megadrives for my son who loves it (and it keeps him off my NGX ;-) I keep meaning to see whether it can also play SMS ROMs, could the original megadrive could couldn't it.

It's a fun handheld. The sound's a little off but it doesn't bother me too much. It doesn't play SMS roms though. The original Genesis did play SMS games with an adapter.
There's also an ATgames handheld that has built-in Master System and Game Gear games. It doesn't have an SD card slot though, so you're stuck with the built-in games.

Yeh, it is a real shame the SMS handheld does not have any expansion capacity. Mortal Kombat on the SMS is actually pretty good (same cannot be said for SF on the SMS).
Anyhow, many of the SMS were updated and released on the megadrive so not so bad.
