Since instructions are a mess these days, I thought I'd save future folks the headache and give explicit instructions as to how I got my Neo Geo X Jailbroken and working.
Pre-requisites:
-The NGX Tools kit
(this is what mine looked like: i.imgur.com/nSYfW1y.jpg )
-A microSD card that is 16GB or smaller in total size
-A Neo Geo X
-The Universe BIOS
-neogeo.zip from the MAME v0.193 ROM set
-Neo Geo ROMs from the MAME v0.193 ROM set
-Win32 Image Writer
-"hack_image_v0.3-45_800M.img" (I found this within an archive named "ImageWriter_RomV345.rar")
-"SD_card.rar" (I found this from this link: docs.google.com/uc?id=0BxuWoD2S8O8yTV8wTE9HWE1ldjQ&export=download )
-ConvertX Rom v3b (I found this within an archive named "Convert Rom v3b.rar") OR fbacache ( "http://dl.openhandhelds.org/cgi-bin/gp2x.cgi?0,0,0,0,15,2682" )
1) Format <=16GB microSD card as FAT32.
2) Insert microSD card in to NGX Tools SD card adapter.
3) Insert NGX Tools SD card adapter in to NGX Tools device.
4) Switch NGX Tools device to "Game Card".
5) Plug NGX Tools device in to PC.
6) Run Win32 Disk Imager (Win32DiskImager.exe)
7) Within Win32 Disk Imager, choose "hack_image_v0.3-45_800M.img" as your Image File.
8) Within Win32 Disk Imager, choose the drive letter of your NGX Tools device from the Device combobox.
9) Within Win32 Disk Imager, press the "Write" button.
10) Remove the NGX Tools device from PC.
11) Remove NGX Tools SD card adapter from NGX Tools device.
12) Insert NGX Tools SD card adapter in to Neo Geo X SD card slot (it inserts upside-down)
13) Switch NGX Tools device to "X".
14) Plug Neo Geo X power cable in to NGX Tools adapter.
15) Plug NGX Tools device in to Neo Geo X via the micro USB while holding the Start button on the Neo Geo X.
16) Continue holding the Start button on the Neo Geo X until the LED on the NGX Tools device begins to flash only blue.
17) The Neo Geo X upgrade screen should eventually appear on the Neo Geo X. It will say "Jailbreak". The jailbreak is now being applied. Wait for it to complete by waiting for the Neo Geo X to boot in to its standard home menu.
At this point, the Jailbreak has been applied and the microSD card may be reused for the next series of steps.
18) Within your neogeo.zip BIOS ROM set, delete asia-s3.rom.
19) Within your neogeo.zip BIOS ROM set, add the Unibios and rename it to asia-s3.rom.
20) Format <=16GB microSD card as FAT32.
21) Insert microSD card in to PC.
22) Apply the contents of SD_card.rar to the microSD card.
23) Run ConvertX Rom v3b.
24) Place your Neo Geo ROMs as individual ZIP archives (e.g., kof94.zip, kof95.zip, etc.) in ConvertX Rom's roms directory.
25) Place your neogeo.zip BIOS ROM set (including the Neo Geo Unibios) in ConvertX Rom's roms directory.
26) Within ConvertX Rom, press the "Scan !" button.
27) Within ConvertX Rom, press the "Action !" button.
28) Your converted ROMs will appear in one or more subdirectories of Convert Rom's /roms/Finish directory.
29) If these ROMs will be used as MVS ROMs, rename their file extensions as "mvs". If they will be used as AES ROMs, rename their file extensions as "aes".
30) If these ROMs will be used as MVS ROMs, move them to your microSD card in the /NEOGEO_MVS directory. If they will be used as AES ROMs, move them to your microSD card in the /NEOGEO_AES directory.
31) Remove the microSD card from PC.
32) Insert microSD card in to NGX Tools SD card adapter.
33) Insert NGX Tools SD card adapter in to Neo Geo X SD card slot (it inserts upside-down)
34) Boot the Neo Geo X.
35) On the main menu, choose the "Game Card" option with the "A" button.
36) In this submenu, you will see all of your available emulators. Selecting one with the "A" button will bring you to a submenu listing all of your available games.
37) Selecting a game from that submenu with the "A" button will launch the game. the "B" button at any time goes back one menu.
NOTES:
-If you wish, you can use the fbacache tool directly instead of ConvertX Rom.
-Swapping asia-s3.rom in neogeo.zip may not be necessary. I haven't tested it.
-Neo Geo games released from the year 2000 and later seem to not work when converted from the MAME v0.193 set. You may need to find these ROMs from an earlier set.
-If you wish your ROMs to have the provided images in the Neo Geo X menu, rename the ROM files to the image file names.
-ROMs from other systems can be placed in their respective directories. If you wish for them to have menu images, add those images, and be sure the ROM matches its image file name.
