What is the UK going rate for a MVS board? I've seen ones on eBay for about 65-70 quid.
If I got one, what would be needed to get it to work?
For example, I will need some kind of power supply, some kind of controller, some means of attaching a screen. Will an LCD work over composite?
Also, the resulting setup in my mind would be an unholy mess of delicate circuits and wires, are there enclosures available? (Without the cost of a cabinet or consolizing.)
I've heard of multi-game carts, do they exist or have I got that wrong? Would that be a cost effective way of getting some games?
Are there any regional considerations or things to watch out for?
Any help would be appreciated.

I can help you out on Multicarts. They do exist, and are the best way to JumpStart playing. They give you a great variety and ways to get your fix while you plan on the rest of your cart buys! The most common is the 161-in-1. They are also sometimes the only way to afford playing some titles on original hardware, such as Samurai Shodown 5 Special.
Bear in mind, those aren't 161 official games. The only real failing in multicarts is how many of the games are either bootlegged versions, and hacks, compared to original titles. I've got the 100-in-1 MVS cart, and it serves me very well!

You will need the MVS board (they are typically $100 for a single slot and the price goes up from there for the 2 slot, 4 slot & 6 slot). Things to consider: the 2 slot board is popular to turn into a CMVS as it has the memory card reader built into the motherboard. The BIOS are generally socketed and pretty easy to swap on almost every board (except for the newest/smallest of the single slot boards).
You will need a power supply with a +5v & +12v (you can get away with only using the +5v if you amplify the sound yourself).
Early single slot boards (and ALL 4/2/6 slot boards) have deep well controller ports (same as on the AES) built into the motherboard. Any AES style controller/pad will work with these.
For video I recommend the JROK video encoder to get the best component picture from the board. Depending on your region you might be able to just grab the RGB and feed it into a PAL monitor (I did this without any video converter when I hooked up one of my single slots to a Sony PVM -Professional Video Monitor as it takes direct RGB).
As far as enclosures go... I don't know of any pre-modded and ready to play. I have made enclosures out of a MegaDrive2 shell before (only the smallest -most expensive- single slot board would fit in there however). Which got me thinking, if done right, the smallest single slot board (MV-1C) would actually fit into an NGX docking station... how cool of an enclosure would that be for a CMVS?
Multicarts are very good (quality & value wise) even though there are a bunch of bootlegs on the board (mostly KOF boots) the vast majority of the games on there are the official ROMs and play perfect. Go for the yellow cart type as those do not require a special dongle to be plugged into the JAMMA connector. Also the yellow carts have no problems in multi-slot boards with other real carts.

The one I was looking at was a MVS MV-1FZS 1-slot board, with a socketed Japanese BIOS. Would that be ok?
I'm confused about the video output, is it the type with separate R, G and B? Not composite?
Where can I get the correct type of power supply, is there a correct name or term I can search for?

the BIOS don't matter if you replace it with a Unibios.....I just wish the AES was socketed......GRRR
i know nothing about consolizing though....i get lost at the video encoder.....bleh.......(plus i can't solder)

An MVS board will not generate a composite signal (without a separate converter), it outputs an RGB sync designed for arcade CRTs. You can actually use an old PC power supply if you're on a budget.

Any help would be appreciated. Mine cost me £80 with postage and was mint. 1. A JAMMA Harness wired to the appropriate buttons and Audio and Video out, my Harness is wired to a Scart lead, then you'll need something to house it all in, or just make it easy on yourself and buy a SuperGun. SUPERGUN below: (Cost around £40 on eBay) The Blue Edge plugs into your MVS, The White connector is for your ATX PSU, the Controller Ports are on the left and the Scart is top right, Audio is inbetween the controller and Scart Jacks, almost central. 2. An ATX PSU 450 Watt +, again wired to the JAMMA Harness, or plug it into your SuperGun if you chose that option. 3. A pair of PC Speakers if you chose the SuperGun option or appropriate lead to connect to your TV Audio Channels. 4. Control Pad's (If you chose the SuperGun option) you'll likely find they allow NEO GEO AES and NEOGEO CD control sticks, but some take MEGADRIVE Pad's too, so at least one of those. 5. Some Money for games.

WOW, thanks mate!
That really clarifies things a bit, I came across references to the Supergun but had no idea what it was. That would really make things much easier using a ATX PSU and scart.

No worries mate it's just a plug and play option that costs more, mainly due to the price of the pads, unless you find a MEGADRIVE 6 Button SuperGun, they don't cost the earth, unlike the AES and NEO' CD pads. I can do you an empty Scart mini cab' then house in your (If you have one) MVS ready to roll with arcade stick buttons, PSU and a TV for £150, and I'll bung in a game, but you'll have to come and collect it, I live in Blackpool/Lancashire, let me know, even if your not happy with what I show you, you can still hang out and play some games for the afternoon, I've got loads.

That's a really kind offer mate. I live in Scarborough but the mother in law is from Blackpool, we've been talking about going there for a day later in the year, I'd definitely be up for a meet. I can leave the other half and her mum to do their own thing. :-)
