I might try that custom LS Spring because I don't think they have the stock LS spring at paradise arcade, one not on the microswitches I have been doing some research OMRON microswitches are used in JLF sticks so its not like they are no name. I migth just try and swap spring before I go and do the switches I’ve just put my stick back together with the stock spring and the LS-56 and I think it has stiffened it up a touch more and it feels little smoother too. I think I'm going to stick with that combo for now and order another LS-56 up for my other stick and do the same on that one. I still think replacing the actuator will help as well. The quality doesn't look that great with lots of marks etc. This stick hasn’t seen a great deal of action either.. Finally back together with a new aluminium Bat Top Handle.

interesting, I just did a quick search for a replacement and I found JLF actuator's but nothing for an LS 56 which is assume what we would need if the LS 56 spring works. I did order some Molycote joystick lubricant to make sure everything was lubed well (as I read that was an issue with these). You think that will help matters at all?
Also here is another question how did you secure the board to the inside now that the buttons are snapin's. I got the same buttons as you used but cant figure out how that can be done because your removing where the board is mounted to.

It might be a case of trial and error finding a suitable actuator replacment.. I made sure that everything was well greased when I put it back together as it does help. I used some Tri-Flow grease with teflon that I've had kicking about for years. I rested the board at an angle and secured it using a couple of cable ties (not to tight) and a spot of hot glue

Thanks for that, I should be getting everything this week, This will be the first time I have soldered anything in 20 years so it should be interesting. Just another quick couple of dumb questions, did you solder all the wires into the board then secure the board and solder to the buttons? Also are the buttons marked with a + and - so I will know which side to solder what to?

Also are the buttons marked with a + and - so I will know which side to solder what to? I soldered the wires to the board first, then soldered the buttons and finally secured the board. As I remember the buttons aren’t marked. It shouldn’t make any difference which way it’s connected. You should be able to see from one of my earlier pics that I colour coded the wiring to the buttons and just lined them up in the same direction and used the top connection on the button as the ground which ties up to the ground on the board. I must say I'm really happy with the way the stick feels now since doubling up the stock & LS-56 springs

That's Cool, I got the custom 3 lb LS-56 spring, I will let you know how that is, I know a standard LS-56 is 2 lb and assuming the stock is 1 lb so it might be similar.

Good luck with it all I'm still looking around for actuators. Whilst searching I found these microswitches: www.arcadeshop.de/Microswitches-Joystick-Switch-short-PEW_1062.html

Those look interesting, I would be interested to know what microswitches are in the original AES stick as I heard that was basically an LS-56 Also another mod that was popular on the original AES stick was an octogate, something similar to this: Might be another mod to consider

Very nice mods and interesting info. Hi all by the way, didn't see an introduce yourself thread so may as well do it here. Missus snagged me an X for Christmas and to be honest i think it's great, there's a lot of negative reviews out there that are quite frankly exaggerated, over suffer from reviewers with ridiculous expectations. Anyway, nice forum

Welcome aboard, you've picked a great time to buy a NGX as it's really beginning to realise its potential, we were all aware the NGX was far from perfect at launch, but it's really turning into something special. Enjoy!

Thanks man...yup, I was another one of those kids drooling over the aes back in the day, so delighted to be able to get my hands on this stuff. I looked into the mvs and carts but still reckon it would eat up too much of any disposable income I might have. Besides mods like the one in this thread can really make this little console that much better, so all good!

MAN looking at these sticks makes me wish I was better at modding things. Soldering irons and I have never been on the best of terms. Great work!

If you don't fancy any of the soldering I'd have a go at replacing the stock spring, It made a word of difference on my stick. I'm not sure how oplix has got on with his custom 3lb LS-56 spring yet.

I just installed the custom 4lb spring into my stick. It does make the stick feel stronger and the grinding alot less noticable, but I think the tension is a bit too strong. I think a 2lb or 3lb would feel better, I'm not used to a stiff joystick.
