I've been thinking about getting a Neo Geo CD/CDZ. I was just wondering what the differences are with the games. Aside from the loading times, are the graphics and sound identical to their AES/MVS counterparts. I have also heard that the CDZ is prone to overheating. Is this true? I'd appreciate any advice or tips about the NGCD. Thanks.

The CD is great for early neo titles that are low meg counts. Fast loaders, great sound, s-video out. Later titles (especially fighters) have long load times and load quite often. Once the game has actually loaded the game play is pretty much identical in nearly every instance. There are missing frames of animation in the later higher meg count games. I have a CD and a CDZ. My CDZ is brand new so can't comment on it overheating but keeping it off the carpet and on a well ventilated TV stand should keep it nice and cool.

I don't think the load times would really bother me much. Most of my consoles have loading times anyway. I'm also interested in the collection aspect for the NGCD since the games don't seem too expensive. I've also thought of getting the AES instead, but I worry that I won't be able to get most of the games I want because of the expense.

Yeah I have 2 games for the Aes...too expensive! If you don't mind me asking, have you ordered any of your Neo Geo consoles from Japan? I'm in the US and I worry a little about ordering stuff from Japan, especially if it's something big like a console. I'd probably be ok ordering games from Japan though.

My boxed AES came from Japan from a seller who used to sell premium mint Neo stuff. System was $300 and shipping was $60. Was shipped in some weird giant envelope type thing but arrived in great shape. My loose AES and boxed CD were bought here in US. My CDZ was NOS purchased from the NEO Store on neogeo.com before the site was ruined by elitist assholes.

That's cool. I was so close to getting a CDZ on ebay from a US seller. It was an auction but I got outbid. It was a good one too since it included the US versions of Samurai Shodown 2 and 3. It seems like the US versions of the NGCD games are quite rare. Anyway, I was thinking of maybe getting some games first and just wait to get the console whenever the opportunity comes.

US CD are definitely harder to find overall. Sam Sho III is my only US CD game. The US games also come with spine cards which are usually a JAP thing.

I just learned about those spine cards recently. It's a bit odd how a little piece of paper can be such a rare commodity. haha...I saw a NGCD on ebay that has the region switch mod so you can switch between US and Japan regions. That's pretty sweet. It was a bit expensive for me though. I think it might've sold already since I couldn't find it anymore.

No. My CD will throw an error with burned games from time to time. Real games work fine though.

I'm still somewhat pondering if I want to get the NGCD or AES. When you got your AES from Japan, did you have any additional expenses like custom fees, etc? Thanks for all your replies, btw.

No additional fees. Not for me at least. If there was either it was built in the shipping fees or he paid for them.

I went for a NGCD (top loader) about a year ago - I happened to be in Japan on business and hunted one down in a retro shop (it cost £25!).
One aspect that people frequently skip over is the quality of the music, which is A LOT better than MVS or AES. Try playing Fatal Fury Special and you'll see what I mean. Emulation and cartridges cannot get you that.
In terms of graphics, I have never noticed the missing frames in games such as Last Blade etc. I do know that they altered the character select screens to reduce loading times.
Personally I don't mind the loading times as I only play on my NGCD on occasion, and nearly always by myself. I normally sip my wine and look through/admire the box artwork. On later versions of KoF the loading times can be reduced further by playing single player rather than team (although personally I just go for the team version).
I have around 40 games I guess some with and some without spine cards. Don't get too fussed by the spinecards as IMO they really add nothing.
Go for it with the NGCD and stock up on some wine!

I might go for the NGCD. I haven't fully decided yet. And you're right about those spine cards. I feel the same way. Do you have any of the World Heores games? I really like those games, especially the first 2.
