Hi guys/gals, I just received my NGX in the mail today, and while i was rather impressed by the hand held, i gotta admit i was rather a bit let down by the arcade sticks themselves. (which i was really looking forwards too myself) For starters, the weight is off and i don't even want to start talking about the buttons… they are.. just… ..wrong.. The actual joystick itself feels ok, though also no where near as nice as my rather crappy (when compared to a Wico stick) Hori fighting stick (ps3). So i am a bit bummed, I was really looking forward to quality sticks, but while these ones are … ok.. and i mean just ok for a casual game, they are no where near what i was expecting… will this Hori stick work with the NGX? or can someone point me in the right direction to at least put some proper buttons in the NGX controller? The stick itself i can live with, but the buttons.. man, have you seen those buttons?? Cheers

As far as I am aware: the only sticks that work with the Neo Geo X are the usual NGX sticks like the one you have or the "Neo Geo Stick 2" which was released for the PS3 / PC a few years back. They were only released in Japan but you can still find them on Ebay / Amazon. I'm not sure about their quality because I've never tried one. Apart from that, all other sticks are a no go for the NGX.

Im quite happy with my arcade sticks, still going strong for nearly 3 years. I ordered a NEO stick 2 from china and never received it. I was gutted at the time, but i do not really need it now.
Once the sticks wear in, they are awesome.

Maybe thats the key, wear them in a bit, i still might do something about the buttons, but id recon the stick itself will work ok. cheers guys.

Today I've ordered Seimitsu buttons and and also stiffer springs which will hopefully decrease the stick grind (if it doesn't help I'll be looking into fitting a larger actuator). Will do a mod asap after items arrives..

That "grind" that people talk about. Is that the sort of.. extra movement thing that happens? Like for example, if I push the stick in any direction and then pull the stick slightly, it lifts and gives the effect of extra movement. I'm not explaining it very well but it's hard to explain.
Did this happen on the normal AES sticks and the PS3 NEO stick 2? Can anyone confirm?

If I push it in a direction until it stops, and then some more, it lifts and grinds. There is no full immediate stop. On my stick it only does that in two directions for the most part, but it annoys me quite a bit. Haven't tried an AES stick in 20 years, can't remember if it had some grind or not.

Has anyone actually replaced the stick with a proper arcade version, not sure, but eyeballing it, it might fit, if I refurb the buttons, I might see if it will fit. I have some really nice wico sticks that id love to use for this.

Well I figured out a way to remove the grind effect.. It's a bit DIY makeshift but it does the job for me: Believe it or not the rubber is from a dyson hoover band I found lying about (yeh I know) cut down to size and fitted onto the stick. It completely stops the ball from being allowed to make that extra movement. I tested the stick on a few games and I can still pull off fighting moves normally etc. It also adds a small amount of resistance to the stick movement. Not enough to push the whole controller about for example, just a small amount of extra resistance. It might not be super tech but it's good enough for me anyway and doesn't look half bad.

Read more: neogeox.proboards.com/thread/416/joysticks-impressed#ixzz3vvSEarHtI bought two ps3 neo geo 2 sticks and I only played with AES stick a couple times. Neither one has the same joystick affect that the neo geo x stick has. This is because the guide for the ngx stick is a little bit too big and the pivot is falling in the whole when the joystick reach the end of the gate. The ps3 Neo Geo Stick 2 enclosure quality isn't quite as good as the original it's still a bit heavier and sturdier than the ngx stick. The joystick also has a shorter throw and comes to a complete stop at the end of the gate. The extra buttons are nice too because I can add credits from the controller without having to press the button on the dock.

Btw, if you're thinking about modding the sticks you're probably better off just buying the PS3 sticks. (given the cost of the stick plus the cost of the buttons and microswitches.)

I only have one NGX stick right now so i'll probably invest in a PS3 one in the near future. Are the buttons any different from the NGX stick to the PS3 one?

I don't remember what the buttons feel like because I modded my ngx sticks with Sanwa buttons years ago. The joystick definitely feel better. I tried changing the switches with cherry switches, and the spring with a seimitsu spring. Though this did improve the feel of the stick I couldn't get rid of the thumping effect.
