Okay, so I am one of those people who always knew about the Neo Geo hardware and always wanted to try it, but could never quite afford it when it was still fresh, so I am finally getting into it recently over the summer.
I figured the Neo Geo X was a great way for me to check out Neo Geo games without buying the AES or MVS console, since I'm not a millionaire.
So, I picked up a Neo X for $130, brand new, on ebay and also bought the Mega Pack Vol. 1 with it as well.
When I first sat down with it, I was like "this is actually pretty cool" and I liked it very much. I liked the overall design of the handheld, and the dock was a neat idea as well as the classic arcade stick that came with it.. I was happy I had purchased it and was wondering what all the naysayers were talking about.
Since it left an impression on me, I decided to pick up a Neo Geo CD console to see what everyone was complaining about with the Neo X.. I found a Neo Geo CD console that came with a bunch of games for a little over $200 on ebay. Now, while the loading times on the Neo CD suck, and is not something I have to worry about with the Neo X, the graphics and sound quality are superior on the Neo CD over the Neo X.. I finally understood what people were complaining about..
With the HDMI cable, the games look flat out awful. I won't even go into detail.. They just look awful on an HD TV with the HDMI cable.. On my old tube TV, using composite, they look much better, but compared to the Neo CD on the same TV, they are too blurred and the colors seem to bleed. As for the sound, it just sounds like the speakers are blown out or something? The audio is scratchy and I have to turn my volume all the way up to hear anything. There also seems to be missing sections of audio in some games. So, I have to admit the emulation is really poor..
That is just on the dock though.. On the handheld, the games actually look pretty good and very close to what they look like on the Neo CD. My only real gripe with the handheld screen (other than the 16:9 not making any sense) is that if you tilt the handheld in any direction other than LOOKING RIGHT AT IT, it gets really dark and grey. I have to look directly at the screen in order to see anything. The same audio issues seem to exist on the handheld as well. Most of my issues though, are with the dock. Not only is the graphics and audio quality bad on the dock, but there seems to be a delay of input response with the arcade stick. I push the buttons but sometimes they just don't work? I have noticed I will be spamming the buttons in games like Pulstar, Metal Slug or Magician Lord and I simply do not fire anything or move sometimes.. And then I get killed.
So, I guess while I might be pointing out the obvious here....does anyone agree with me that these are real issues with this thing?
