I fear SNK, listened far too much to the board-hoarders on that OTHER EVIL SITE, and their members pro-actively slurred the NGX at every opportunity which then snowballed.
All the criticisms were mainly pre-update and addressed later. As for build quality, that's subjective, I think it's fine. There was a section of fanatics who would not accept emulation at all, who have no concept how embedded systems are made and would have seen a NGX that would have cost almost £1,000 that offered a minimal improvement over the product we did finally get.
Ironically, so called SNK fans killed the NGX, most likely to protect their own investments in old boards rather than wanting new hardware and the opportunity for new people to become part of their elite club at a fraction of the price they themselves paid.
I'm proud to own a NGX, to hell with the complainers and naysayers.

One thing that came to mind recently was the comments when the NGCD was originally launched. Whilst the NGCD is now fully accepted at the time alot of comments focused on poor build quality (front loader prone to breakdown, CDZ to overheating) and on load times - somehow as this was not a cartridge sytem it could not be SNK.
Of course looking back now NGCD is completely accepted as 'an SNK' machine. I hope someday peple will view the NGX in a similar vein - a shame then that further updates were never officially released to iron out the screen tearing.

If that happens, it's very likely that enough interest would prompt someone to either finally break the official v500a firmware, or do more fixes and optimizations of the current jailbreak. Big 'if' on that one, though.

Agreed, a big if.
I am really interested to hear people's views who have both an X and a NGCD/AES/MVS. Is the joystick lag really so noticeable?

The joystick lag really isn't that noticeable, especially if you replace the stock switches with cherry switches. I only noticed a difference when I compared this system with my wii virtual console. Feels like it's about 20ms or less difference.

Il tell everyone the same. For me in the UK my neogeo x runs on a 24 inch HDMI TV composite out, with the jailbreak. First time i connected, screen quality looked like a busted ass, until i adjust screen colours and sharpness. Hdmi is nowhere close to composite out quality.
I am very happy with output and use composite over hdmi
My vids below show why im happy with output.

Composite out ran through a VCR is the best way to enjoy the X! VCR boosts the composite out signal and cleans it up significantly! CRT all the way!

Owning all of the above, the only difference I noticed stick wise, was that the X stick movement doesn't feel as smooth as my AES stick. The buttons have a different texture to them, but they still respond the same. The only time I noticed any lag was on certain TVs. It was either no difference, or unplayable. Like almost a full second of input lag. Works fine on what I'm using now, though.
But to be fair, it's been a LONG time since I hooked it up to a TV, I just use it as a handheld now and let my AES take care of the TV.

Thanks Danthor. The reason for my interest is that I am considering picking up a NGCD - there are still some good deals on ebay for this machine.
Sounds like the lag time should not be an issue, but still fun to collect. Having grown up with a C64 load times of under a minute are no issue to me lol.

NGCD is very worth having, if only for the exclusives alone, such as Crossed Swords 2. And dat music. If you've got a TV that supports S-video, (Ideally on a CRT) you're gonna see some of the crispest Neo goodness you've ever seen. The NGCD was my very first Neo hardware (NGPC notwithstanding) and still one of my favorite systems.

You've definitely whetted appetite.
I think the NGCD is a good place to start collecting, and who knows, maybe eventually I'll end up with an AES one day?

Great place to start. And that's exactly how I ended up, so now I've got the best of all worlds.

I've thought of getting a NGCD myself, though the load times somewhat worry me since I'm used to the arcades and the NGX. hehe. I'd be 100% satisfied with my NGX if it didn't have screen tearing. It's a bit odd how screen tearing is present when you play on TV, but I don't really notice any of it when playing on just the handheld itself.

It is easy to get hung up on the screen tearing, but I normally find that, once playing, I stop noticing it (or at least it bugs me less). It also depends on the game being played - soccer brawl seems particularly affected (due to the scrolling on screen at all times I guess?),
That said, it has never impacted gameplay and for me that is what it is all about.
I know what you mean about being worried about load times. I remember back in the day load times = practicing joystick inputs for combos to help memorise and reading the instruction manual!

I agree that the screen tearing isn't too noticeabe once you start playing and having fun. What annoys me though is when I think how Tommo could've made more firmware updates and released more games if SNK didn't pull the plug on the NGX.
